Steve Arens founded Leelanau Coffee Roasting in January, 1993, and rented a space on Lake Street (now the Cherry Republic Soda Fountain). Steve’s brother John quickly partnered in the business in 1994, and as Cherry Republic and Leelanau Coffee grew, we moved over one block to Western Avenue, opening the new shop in 1998. The cafe quickly became too small, so an addition was built. A patio and garden were added. Then the retail and roasting areas were too small, and more of the building was rented and the roaster moved again. Winter of 2006 saw John remodel the cafe into the beautiful space it is today. Leelanau Coffee Roasting offers coffee drinks and beans in the retail cafe; coffee beans and merchandise via mail order; and wholesales coffee to a wonderful collection of cafes, gift stores, basket companies, and specialty & grocery stores. 2008 marks our Fifteenth Year, and we are proud of our heritage, and excited about the future.
Please read this excerpt from Joanne Bender’s story, “Chatter au lait … and Coffee, too”, which the Glen Arbor Sun published in August 2007:
They meet daily at the Leelanau Coffee Roasting Company in Glen Arbor, winter, spring, summer and fall. Outside or inside, depending on weather conditions. “They” includes the “regulars” and most are “locals.” Why? To talk, to laugh, to chide one another and to have a cup of java.
The group has been meeting every day for a number of years … whenever they’re in town. On this particular Wednesday in mid-August, Mike, Morrie, Ken, Gretchen, Tom, Dick, Dan, Eunice and Jim were sipping and slipping into their day.
