Cavaliers battle Spartans in Leelanau

The University of Virginia women’s Division One soccer team will play a preseason match against Michigan State University (MSU) women’s soccer team on Friday, Aug. 15, at 1 p.m. at Myles Kimmerly Park, one mile west of Maple City. The event is free and open to the public. Bring a lawn chair or blanket, and prepare to enjoy a fast-paced game of the world’s sport.

The nationally number-one ranked Virginia Cavaliers have held their preseason training at the Leelanau School for the past dozen years. Head coach Steve “Swanee” Swanson is a 1984 MSU graduate; his wife Julie (Polakowski) Swanson was a star basketball player at Leland High School, and was named the first-ever “Miss Basketball” in 1981 during her senior year. She went on to play basketball for the Spartans.
