Celebrating its 21st season in the beautiful Leelanau Peninsula, the Manitou Music Festival presents another lineup of exciting and diverse concerts featuring: jazz, classical, blues, folk, country, celtic, bluegrass and world music in some of Michigan’s most idyllic settings. The Festival showcases regionally and nationally known artists performing in Glen Arbor.

Many years have passed since Glen Arbor had antiques and collectibles available in town. But they will be back for one day, Saturday, Jul 23, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at The Cottage Antique Market. Midwest dealers from Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Iowa and Illinois will sell their antique and vintage goods in the Pine Patch at The Cottage Book Shop.

This Saturday 16, July 16, is the Anchor Days festival in Empire and Paul Skinner reports that floats are needed for the parade. The theme this year is “Whatever Goes”. Gather at Johnson Park at 1.30 p.m.

One of the most popular farmsteads in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will get a major facelift. Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear (PHSB) will focus its mainland project this summer on the Treat Farmhouse. PHSB will spend $5,000 to contract out scraping and priming the exterior of the house to be followed by two volunteer projects.

Ohio artist Joe Lombardo exhibits plein air paintings of Leelanau County, including scenes from the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore from July 15-21 at the Center Gallery at Lake Street Studios, 6023 S. Lake St., Glen Arbor. The show opens with a public reception at 6 p.m. on Friday, July 15.

Green Cuisine, scheduled this year for Wednesday, July 13 from 5-8 p.m., is Michigan’s first zero waste event and an expression of Food for Thought’s mission to “raise awareness around just and sustainable food systems” and an effort to promote the best in local food and sustainable business practices.

Empire businesses including The Secret Garden, The Miser’s Hoard, Grocer’s Daughter Chocolate, Sleeping Bear Surf & Kayak and Deerings Market will promote a series of Musical Evenings through the summer on alternate Thursday evenings. The first one, on Thursday, July 14, will begin at 7 p.m. and feature music by Bo Bossa, a local four-piece ensemble that plays swing, jazz, blues, Latin, fusion and whatever else they feel like playing. The stores involved will provide refreshments and stay open late.

The Manitou Music Festival rings in its 21st year on July Fourth weekend with a free Saturday concert by the Northport Community Band, one of Leelanau County’s favorite groups. Bring lawn chairs and blankets to the lawn outside the Glen Arbor Athletic Club for a 4 p.m. concert of patriotic music. In case of rain, the concert will be held in the Glen Arbor Township Hall.

Center Gallery at Lake Street Studios in Glen Arbor begins its summer of weekly exhibitions July 1 with metal sculpture by Rod Bearup. The exhibition opens with a public reception at 6 p.m., and runs through July 7.
