Cottage Book Shop hosts three authors

Award-wining Michigan brothers, Jack and Dave Dempsey, have teamed up to write Ink Trails, a literary trip around the state of well-known and sometimes obscure authors introducing the breath of their works accomplishments. Sharing their discoveries and how the Michigan landscape helped shape their writing leads to a greater appreciation. Benzie authors Bruce Catton and Gwen Frostic and Glenn Ruggles of Antrim County are included along with Robert Frost, Carl Sandburg, Arthur Miller, Robert Traver, James Oliver Curwood and Jane Kenyon. The Dempseys will visit the Cottage Book Shop in Glen Arbor on Saturday, June 15 at 2 p.m. to share their journey and findings. Other books by Dave include William. G. Millikan, Waters of Michigan, Great Lakes for Sale and by Jack, Michigan and the Civil War.

Celebrate National Trails Day on Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail

You can celebrate National Trails Day, June 1, on the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail (SBHT) at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. National Trails Day encourages all Americans to get outside to celebrate the importance of natural places where you can recreate, breathe some fresh air, and experience what nature can offer, including inspiration, education, solitude, amazing scenery, and peace of mind. There will be information, activities, and a refreshment stop hosted by the Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes (FSBD) and Park Rangers along the first segment of the SBHT, which runs from the Dune Climb to Glen Arbor. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Parking is available at the Dune Climb, the historic village of Glen Haven, or in Glen Arbor at the lower Alligator Hill trailhead.

“Pickin’ on Joah”, Empire to remember a gentle giant

This Sunday, May 26, from 4-6 p.m. at the Village Inn in Empire, the Empire Area Community Emergency Fund will hold its monthly fund-raising concert to honor and celebrate the memory of Joah Dye, a beloved member of the community — not a musician, but rather a lover of music, people and life. The performers have chosen to “headline” Joah at this event. Among some of his favorite musicians are Chris Skellenger, Tom Fordyce, Norm Wheeler, Paul Koss and Patrick Niemisto who lovingly coined this event “Pickin’ On Joah”.

Birding Festival returns to Leelanau

Come join the fun at the 2013 Leelanau Peninsula Birding Festival, May 29-June 2. It’s nesting season in Leelanau where our fields and forests are full of bird songs and activity. For 2013 the festival is adding a bus trip to see Kirtland’s warbler with noted Kirtland’s specialist Jerry Weinrich. Jerry will lead guests to a special access site on Kirtland’s nesting grounds. As a bonus, Birdfest is arranging for the bus to journey just a short way north of the Kirtland’s warbler location to Hartwick Pines State Park for evening grosbeaks, and red-shouldered hawks. Check out the schedule of events for nine other popular field trips including Birding-By-Tall-Ship aboard the schooner Inland Seas and Birding-By-Ear at a new location, Teichner Preserve.

Biking “The Bear” Tour brings hundreds of cyclists to Leelanau

Beginning on Wednesday, June 12, more than 300 cyclists participating in the 2013 NorthWest Biking “The Bear” Tour will begin the annual five-day tour of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Traverse City, Leelanau County and Frankfort areas. Each day, cyclists will ride a looped route that starts from their base camp at Indigo Bluffs RV Park south of the Glen Lakes. They will visit the following areasto enjoy the scenery, restaurants and tourist attractions of northwest Michigan.

Lakeside Shakespeare Theatre kicks off 10th anniversary season

The Lakeside Shakespeare Theatre (LST) will transform Oliver Art Center into the House of Capulet for An Evening in Verona — a 10th anniversary season fundraising event for northern Michigan’s own professional Shakespeare Company. In an effort to build community and highlight their 2013 Season, LST will treat guests to the music of wandering minstrels, local food, and wine — but the focus will be interactive scenes performed by the company.
