When it comes to senior participation in sports, pickleball has risen to the top rung of popularity. “Exercise is one of the great keys to success for older citizens,” said local tennis coach, La Becasse bartender, and pickleball enthusiast Tim Sutherland.

Endurance Evolution puts on some of the best races in northern Michigan. This year, the USATF-certified Glen Arbor Solstice Half Marathon and 5k takes place on June 17. The half marathon starts at 7 a.m. and the 5k starts 10 minutes later. As you may have guessed, this annual event takes place right around the summer solstice. The solstice marks the onset of summer, one of the jolliest times of the year in Northern Michigan. Running a race in Glen Arbor is the perfect way to kick off the start of this long-awaited season.

Online registration for the ninth annual M22 Challenge will go “live” at 8 a.m. on March 1. The event, to be held Saturday, June 10, near the Sleeping Bear Dune Climb, is capped at 900 athletes and in the past several years has reached capacity within 15 minutes.

Everyone here has a favorite Lake Michigan beach. But what about those smaller lakes that dot our woods and meadows, or the creeks and rivers meandering through our woodlands? Which inland waters are preferred by locals who have lived in the area for a long time?

The good news: the popular Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail has expanded and opened its fourth leg, which will eventually run 3.8 miles east from Port Oneida to Bohemian Road and Good Harbor Bay, bringing the trail total to 17 miles. The bad news: the trail addition is only partly complete. The construction of a boardwalk over the southern shore of Narada Lake (about halfway between Port Oneida and Bohemian) is far behind schedule, and work won’t resume on the bridge until July 5.
