Longtime science journalist Joe VanderMeulen understands the challenges these developments pose to volunteer conservationists, natural resource professionals and the organizations working to manage, protect and preserve the forests, wetlands, streams and lakes of our beloved region.

Maple City to get Glen Arbor playground equipment

Kids enjoying the new Glen Arbor playground equipment but who also miss their past favorites will be able to ride that zip line, teeter totter, swing on those swings, and operate that excavator in Maple City next summer, thanks to the brainstorm of one Maple City resident with help from many others.

Glen Lake Community Library holds Children’s holiday book drive

A special holiday tradition continues, Nov. 15-17, as the Glen Lake Community Library holds its 19th annual call for children’s books. The Friends of the Library, in cooperation with Glen Lake School’s “Parenting Communities” program, is once again collecting donations of new children’s books for children whose families are in need of assistance this holiday season.

Glen Lake Library hosts barns film

The Glen Lake Community Library will present a free documentary film, The Barn Raisers, on Friday, November 17 at 7 p.m., in the Empire Township Hall. The film explores Midwest barns through the lens of architecture, building methods, barn styles, and materials: what they tell us about the people who built them, the life they lived, and the role these “country cathedrals” played in the settling and building of our country.

Apple Crunch celebrates Farm to School in northern Michigan

Cherry Republic president Bob Sutherland and his sons Colebrook and Hawthorn bite into Michigan Apple Crunch Day on Oct. 25 at Glen Lake School. The event was sponsored by Cherry Capital Foods, Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District, and the Groundwork Center for Resilient Communities, which celebrated 15 years of catalyzing the farm to school movement in northern Michigan.

Leelanau School names Robert C. Hansen as 15th head of school

The Leelanau School, the experiential learning private high school in Glen Arbor, has hired Robert C. Hansen to be its head of school — the 15th in Leelanau’s history.

Veterans Day weekend is fee-free at Sleeping Bear Dunes

Superintendent Scott Tucker is pleased to announce that Veterans Day Weekend, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 11-12, will be celebrated as fee-free days for all Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore visitors in honor of U.S. veterans and current members of the U.S. Armed Forces. Come and experience your park during this special fee-free weekend or any day! The National Lakeshore is open year-round.
