Glen Arbor zoning vote could determine future of Mill project

The signs are seemingly everywhere around Glen Arbor this summer: the black and white “VOTE YES! Save The Mill” up against the red white and blue “Glen Arbor Zoning Proposal VOTE NO.” Here’s what at stake. During the primary election on Tuesday, August 3, Glen Arbor Township residents will vote to either approve, or overturn, the Township Board’s decision on February 16, by a 4-1 vote, to rezone the Brammer parcel next to the historic, 1870s era Kelderhouse-Brammer grist mill on the Crystal River from “residential” to “recreational.”

The Makings of the “Crown Jewel” of S. Fox Island

The South Fox Island Light Station is located 17 miles off the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula in northeastern Lake Michigan, and is a part of Leelanau County. The “crown jewel” of this historic complex is the light tower built in 1867. It rises some 39 feet above its base and some 69 feet above the lake level. It sat—for the most part—alone and forlorn since it was deactivated by the United Stated Coast Guard (USCG) in 1958.

Glen Lake star goalkeeper to play soccer in England this fall

Soccer-crazed England narrowly missed “bringing it home” and winning its first Euro Cup since 1966—after losing on penalty kicks to Italy on July 11—but Britain will nab a star Glen Lake Laker to suit up and play in goal this fall. Becca Nowicki, the star keeper who graduated this spring from Glen Lake High School, will play soccer in England this coming fall. Nowicki was courted by Macclesfield FC International Academy, which is based in Preston, north of Manchester.

Run faster than the bear at July 27 Running Bear Run

Glen Arbor’s popular annual Running Bear Run is back in 2021. Join the event on July 27 for a wonderful day with family and friends. Everyone is included from little ones to Grandma and Grandpa. There are nine age categories from 10 & under to 70 and up. You can run the 5K or take a more leisurely walk. The kids will have the “½ Mile Kids’ Run” to chase that bear. The Running Bear Run is back to charm the kids and to make great photo ops for all.

Northwoods Hardware, Home & Garden in Glen Arbor plans expansion

Northwoods Hardware owners Jeff and Georgia Gietzen have announced the purchase of property directly adjacent to their current business (where Wildflowers was located until last summer). The Gietzens anticipate the purchase of 50 percent of the remaining south lot by mid-July. The Wildflowers property had previously been purchased by a developer with plans to build condos, but is no longer moving forward with the development.

The museum inside author Lynne Rae Perkins’ mind

Lynne Rae Perkins, an award-winning Suttons Bay author and illustrator, has released a new book, “The Museum of Everything.” The book, a kind of map—or as publisher Harper Collins calls it, an invitation to go on “an imagination-fueled journey through the living museum that surrounds us all—is the museum. And the museum has in it, among other things, a cloud, a shadow, an island that could be a stone in a puddle.

Leelanau restaurants face the dilemma: require vaccines, or masks?

To say that last year was rough for our local hospitality industry is to severely understate the case. Restaurants and caterers have had to retrain staff, let go many, move most of their seating (when possible) outside, reduce indoor capacity, and limit contact between staff and clients to the bare minimum. Some shifted to purely take-out. Some had to close. For caterers, a summer that promised 20-30 events was reduced to two. Some clients chose food trucks instead of the originally requested sit-down, full-service meal.

All the world’s a stage

Beatrix Hills, a 13-year-old actor from Suttons Bay, won’t just get to perform in the play “Ugly, A New Pop Musical”—which is based on Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Ugly Duckling”—she and other youth actors get to write, direct and choreograph the show.

Music, art, and coffee converge at Lake Street Studios

Music returns as the Lake Street Music Festival tunes up this month (behind the Center Gallery across from Cherry Republic). And the variety of art available here continues apace. The newest addition to the Lake Street Studios complex is Rinco Bros. Coffee Roasters.
