Art Association hosts second artist in residence

From staff reports

The Glen Arbor Art Association’s (GAAA) second Artist-in-Residence, Rachel Drelles of Muskegon, Mich., is a printmaker and woodblock artist. The public is invited to her presentation on Thursday, May 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the GAAA’s building, 6031 S. Lake Street, across from Cherry Republic in Glen Arbor. Drelles is a graduate of Kendall College of Art and Design and has been student teaching in addition to furthering her own artistic life in printmaking, intaglio, collograph and woodblock prints.

At the 83rd Muskegon Art Museum show last spring Drelles’ work incorporated her prints in a 3D sculptural form of hand stitched papers. She plans on showing the audience her process of carving and printing woodblocks, which she has been doing by hand with a wooden spoon and a simple Japanese baren.

During her residency Drelles says she will be “focused on developing my visual narrative and the initial carving of my woodblocks.” Her reference material comes from “sketches, photographs and notes of the local setting.” As a child, Drelles spent many happy vacations in northern Michigan’s landscape. These visual memories play a large part in her artistic narrative.

The presentation is free and refreshments will be served.
