Art Association holds Readers’ Theater auditions for Madame La Gimp

From staff reports

Glen Arbor Art Association announces auditions for the Readers’ Theater performance of Madame La Gimp and In a New York Minute on April 27 at 7pm.

Auditions are coming up for a hilarious tale of antics and romance called Madame La Gimp. A down on her luck New York fruit seller named Apple Annie (Madame La Gimp) has the shock of her life when she learns her long separated daughter is coming with her fiancé and his parents from Spain to meet her. It seems that Apple Annie has been characterizing herself in her letters as a wealthy aristocrat. Because one of her steady customers, gangster Dave the Dude, believes she is his good luck charm, he decides to extend the charade by helping Annie pose as a New York socialite.

In a New York Minute by Celeste Crouch is a brief prelude to the play Madame La Gimp. In dramatic form, it highlights Damon Runyon’s journey from sports writer to the legendary American writer he is considered today. Characters from Runyon’s famous short stories and the Runyon biographer, Jimmy Breslin, tell the tale of Runyon’s switch from sports writing to fiction and how he came to incorporate the New York mob as subject matter for his renowned and hilarious short stories. There are 8-12 characters in the combined plays. Those auditioning can try out for any role irrespective of the genders of the characters.
