Asparagus is ripe in the land of the Sleeping Bear

Empire’s quirky, fun, day-long Asparagus Festival returns to Leelanau County on Saturday, June 6. The day of peace, music and food offers something for everyone in the family. Events include the Kick-Yer Ass-paragus 5K Fun Run/Walk at Empire’s public beach at 10 am; a pop-up book sale at the Glen Lake Community Library from 11 am-3 pm; a recipe contest in the Township Hall at noon (click on the story for a link to enter); open hours at the Empire Area Museum from 1-4 pm; the Ode to Asparagus Poetry Contest at the Library at 2 pm (click on the story for a link to enter); an appearance by the Asparagus Queen on Stilts from 2-4 pm, and the Magic Lady Family Magic Show from 3-4 pm.

Glen Arbor Arts Center holds Late Night Fridays with A to Z Music

The Glen Arbor Arts Center (GAAC) is keeping the lights on a little longer this summer. Late Night Fridays continues Friday, June 21, with open galleries and a front porch concert from 5-8 pm. A to Z Music performs on the GAAC’s front porch stage. Zinnia Dungjen and Audrey Mason are a singer-songwriter duo from Interlochen Arts Academy, and will perform a unique blend of original songs and covers. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring their own seating, and refreshments.

Leelanau students perform at Interlochen Arts Academy

At the end of every school year, Interlochen Arts Academy hosts a festival commemorating the hard work and talent demonstrated by their student body. This celebration includes Morp, the palindrome that the students and faculty affectionately call their prom, multiple performances around campus, all of which are open to the public, and to wrap up the year, commencement. The festival, which runs May 24-27, is the long-awaited crescendo of a successful school year, and it features several Leelanau County students currently attending the academy.
