For Empire resident and retired nurse Kathy Wiejaczka, the spark to run for office came when she and her 34-year-old daughter Adele attended the Women’s March on Washington, Jan. 21, 2017. With rallies in cities and towns across the nation, the Women’s March is considered the largest single-day demonstration in U.S. history. It overshadowed the crowds at the previous day’s presidential inauguration.
The January 21, 2017, Women’s March on Washington, D.C. attracted more than half a million demonstrators to the banks of the Potomac. Writer Anne-Marie Oomen of Empire, and other Leelanau women shared their experiences from that day.
On January 21, the day after the presidential inauguration, I will attend the Women’s March in Washington D.C. to spend the day walking Independence Avenue with people from all over the country. Simultaneously, marches will occur in major cities all over the country. Why am I going? I’m compelled for a myriad of reasons I have been asked to voice here.
