Jeff and Patty Brandt planned to retire to Glen Arbor. Jeff beat his wife to the punch, selling his business a couple years ago. He became a stay-at-home dad at their home in Connecticut, while Patty commuted to New York City. Then they found out Synchronicity was for sale. Goodbye retirement, hello art gallery. “I retired until I bought Synchronicity,” Jeff says with a laugh. The family had purchased a home on Big Glen but weren’t ready to commit to anything until they moved here. Then a friend told the Brandts that one of their favorite galleries was quietly for sale. “We knew we wanted than just a house. When the business came up, it was meant to be,” says Jeff.

Sophie Bolen, a 23-year-old rising country/pop music artist who grew up in Grand Rapids, summers in Glen Arbor, and writes and records in Nashville, recently released the music video for her single “Night Owl” (a song borrowed from acclaimed songwriter Deanna Walker). The video features scenes at iconic locations including Art’s Tavern, the beach at Glen Haven and Sleeping Bear Point. Click here to read our interview with Bolen and to watch the video.

Dick Devinney, a longtime resident of Glen Arbor and Grand Rapids, founding director of the popular Summer Singers and former owner of Synchronicity Gallery, died recently while traveling in Paris. He is survived by his wife, Marion. Our thoughts are with the Devinney family, and we’re grateful for all Dick and Marion have done for the Glen Arbor community. Please read our feature story about Dick, “Singing in the Summertime,” which we published in June 2006.
