Francesca Cuthbert’s love affair began as a summer camper in the 1960s when she “fell in love with coastal dunes and islands in the Great Lakes,” she said June 11 at the opening Research Rendezvous lecture, a monthly series of talks about studies being conducted in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The talks are delivered year-round at the visitor center in Empire.

Do you love yoga, fresh air, and the sound of gentle waves lapping at the beach. Come and experience the beach in a whole different way. The Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes is partnering with Yoga on the Beach to conduct two yoga sessions this summer. All donations for the classes benefit Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes, who maintain the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail, among other important functions.

Glen Arbor Sun editor Jacob Wheeler competed in, and filmed the 2015 M-22 Challenge, a unique Northern Michigan triathlon that includes a 2.5-mile run up the Sleeping Bear Dune Climb, an 18-mile bike ride around the Glen Lake and a 2.5-mile paddle on Little Glen Lake.

An argument can be made that the stars stayed closer to the earth because people did move, because their homes and farms and land legacies were purchased by the feds to become the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

Grand Rapids artist Holly Sturges takes viewers on a tour of her secret painting places in “Shhh! Don’t Tell,” new plein air landscapes on view from July 10-16 at Center Gallery, 6023 S. Lake St., in Glen Arbor. A reception to open the exhibition is from 6-8 p.m.

Local law enforcement believe they may have stopped a massive and illegal rave party from taking place at North Bar Lake last Saturday night. Dozens of police cars were deployed to Empire by the Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office, in coordination with the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and sheriff’s departments from Grand Traverse and Benzie County.
