“Angel bike” helps athlete finish M22 Challenge

Ryan DeCook owns the M22 Challenge. The 45-year-old won the Leelanau County running, biking and paddling triathlon for the sixth time overall. But that wasn’t the headline of the 18th annual M22 Challenge. Races like this one are competitive, but they also inspire acts of kindness. Brook Tyrrell, a 26-year-old Traverse City resident, discovered her bike had a flat tire within the first mile. She pulled off M-109 and looked for help. “Hi, I have a flat. Do you have a pump?” she asked spectator, Katie Butera, who was standing next to her own bike. Thanks to Butera’s “angel bike,” Tyrrell placed third in her age group.

DeCook wins his fifth M22 Challenge

The weather gods smiled on Glen Arbor with calm winds, cool temps, and no rain as the 17th annual M22 Challenge unfolded on June 14 at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, delivering an unforgettable morning. Nine hundred athletes competed in the iconic run–bike–paddle race that winds through the dunes, roads, and waters of one of the most scenic venues in the country. Ryan DeCook of Washington, Mich., claimed his fifth M22 Challenge title, cementing his place as a race legend, finishing with a time of 1:22:12. Amy Coneset delivered a standout performance to take the top spot in the female division with a time of 1:40:55.

Ryan DeCook, a 42-year-old resident of Washington, Michigan, won his second consecutive M22 Challenge on Saturday, June 10, with an overall time of 1 hour, 16 minutes, and 47 seconds. This was the third time he has won the popular triathlon, which local organizers consider one of the most beautiful races in the nation.

Sunny and a cool 64 degrees Fahrenheit made it an especially beautiful day in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
