Each year the Glen Arbor Art Association’s (GAAA) August Plein Air Paint Out attracts artists from throughout Michigan and the Midwest to paint for a day in the Glen Lake area and then sell their paintings at the popular annual Wet Painting Sale at GAAA’s gallery off Lake Street on Saturday, Aug. 4 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
The third annual Port Oneida Run — a 5K Barn to Barn Trail Run/Walk in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will take place on Saturday, August 4. The natural trail offers an inspiring alternative to paved courses, meandering through beautiful meadows, forests, and the pastoral landscape of farmsteads from the late 1800s in the Port Oneida Rural Historic District with bluff views over Lake Michigan.
Phase One of the Heritage Trail, a paved, 10-foot-wide multi-use trail, which runs from the Dune Climb to Glen Arbor, is the first leg of what supporters envision will one day be a 27-mile trail from the Leelanau-Benzie County Line running north to Good Harbor Bay. Though it has been operational for over a month, the Heritage Trail’s official grand opening is scheduled for June 20 at 1:30 p.m. at the Sleeping Bear Dune Climb.

The National Park Service at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore) announced the completion of the Port Oneida Historic Landscape Management Plan/Environmental Assessment with the signing of the “Finding of No Significant Impact” (FONSI) on January 17.
The final presentation of the Glen Arbor Art Association’s Artist-in-Residence series will be on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 7:30 p.m. Pennsylvania artist and summer resident of Burdickville, Lynn Uhlmann will present her work of landscapes in the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore.
This summer, the National Park Service (NPS) unveiled its options for the Historic Landscape Management Plan of the Port Oneida Rural Historic District. Some four miles east of Glen Arbor, the shoreline settlement was founded as a logging community, with subsistence (family) farming and fishing, in the early 1860s by immigrant pioneers from Prussia and Hanover (now parts of modern Germany), and lived in continuously until the 1970s. It is defined as a “historic vernacular landscape … that has evolved through use by ordinary people” over a “period of significance of 1870-1945,” in the Plan’s Executive Summary, and it is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
On Saturday, Sept. 3, at 9 a.m., Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear hosts their second annual Port Oneida Barn to Barn Run/Walk – a 5K on the Bayview Trail in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
The Leelanau Scenic Heritage Route Committee, Michigan Department of Transportation, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore), Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation (TART) Trails, Inc., and Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes are proud to announce that the Federal Highway Administration has awarded two grants towards construction of 3.7 miles of the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail (SBHT).
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Superintendent Dusty Shultz has announced the availability of the Port Oneida Historic Landscape Management Plan/Environmental Assessment. The Environmental Assessment (EA) describes and analyzes alternative approaches for addressing historic landscape management activities at the Port Oneida Rural Historic District (Port Oneida).
