Summer brings activities to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Day or night, sunny or cloudy, the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore provides opportunities for family fun. Whether it’s self-directed hikes or drives, ranger-led programs or events coordinated by partners such as Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes or Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear, the area offers plenty of ways to explore, engage and maybe even get a little exercise. You may want to start early if you’re planning on some of the more popular attractions. On its website, the National Park Service recommends hitting the following before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. to allow for easier parking, lower temperatures and fewer fellow outdoor enthusiasts.

“Brutal work” shoveling sand. Goodbye, Pierce Stocking overlook

Millions of visitors to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore remember the iconic wooden viewing platform a short walk from the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive stop #9, which was removed by Park staff last month after shifting sands eroded the platform’s support. Thousands have taken photos since the full platform was installed in 1986. Some ran down the steep cliff toward Lake Michigan. A few couldn’t get back up and paid hefty fines to be rescued by rangers and first responders. Tom Mountz, a former maintenance worker who retired from Sleeping Bear Dunes in 2018 after 43 years on the job, remembers shoveling sand when the platform was installed nearly 40 years ago. Lots of sand. “Several times a week, first thing in the morning, a crew of four-six of us needed to shovel the boardwalk to #9. From a few inches of sand to a foot or more. Brutal work. But we were all 25-30 years old. Eventually a new, improved boardwalk was built and properly sized so a tractor could remove 90 percent of the sand.”

Sleeping Bear Dunes hosts National Trails Day Project

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore invites those interested in assisting the Park to join in a National Trails Day project on Saturday, June 7. Park Rangers will meet participants at the Shauger Hill Trailhead parking lot at 9 am and will conclude at noon. The project will put the finishing touches on this year’s cleanup of Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive’s Lake Michigan Overlook.

Your Sleeping Bear Dunes experience this year may feel very different

UPDATE (March 12): The National Park Service once again has the green light to hire seasonal workers, but the late start has hampered the ability of Sleeping Bear Dunes to populate its seasonal roster. As of Glen Arbor Sun press time, approximately 80 percent of the National Lakeshore’s more than 100 seasonal positions remained vacant. The federal government chaos and the inability of seasonals from outside the area to find housing has prompted a slew of declines from candidates who were suddenly called and offered seasonal positions in March. Sleeping Bear Dunes staff have been paralyzed in other ways, too. Government-issued credit cards used by Park staff are frozen. They can’t buy ammunition or ranger supplies; they can’t even buy toilet paper for outhouses at hiking trails.

Missing Wisconsin man found, arrested at Sleeping Bear Dunes

A man reported missing from Milwaukee was located by officials at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore on Tuesday afternoon, August 20. Steven Lisowski, 28, of Wisconsin, was taken into custody about 2:30 p.m. ET after an altercation between Lisowski and police officers. Lisowski had been reported critically missing by the Milwaukee Police Department on Sunday, August 18. A critical missing alert is used by the police department when an individual may be particularly vulnerable. On Tuesday, as officers attempted to detain Lisowski, an altercation ensued before he was eventually restrained with the assistance of the Benzie County Sheriff’s Office police K-9. Lisowski and the two officers were transported to Munson Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries sustained during the altercation. Charges against Lisowski are pending.

Joining the “Bordulac Attack”

Detroit native Pam Baad—pictured here jogging up the Lake Michigan Overlook at Pierce Stocking Drive—was named women’s “champignon” of the 2021 Bordulac Attack. The informal race is organized by the Bordulac family, includes six segments in and around Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and must be completed between June 15 and Halloween. Anyone can form a team or compete solo on any given day by using the Strava mobile app.

Sleeping Bear Gateways Council aims to help National Lakeshore manage growing pains

The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and surrounding communities are suffering growing pains as we’ve become a prime destination for tourists from all over the world. Conscious of these growing pains, a new group called the Sleeping Bear Gateways Council is stepping forward to facilitate dialogue between the National Lakeshore, local business leaders and civic leaders.
