In northern Michigan’s vineyards and orchards, ablaze with fall colors, migrant farmworkers are known to sing corrido ballads and folk songs as they pick grapes and apples from sunrise to sundown. But their voices fell silent this autumn when targeted roadside arrests by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol and workplace visits by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) increased starting in late September.

Beginning on Wednesday, June 12, more than 300 cyclists participating in the 2013 NorthWest Biking “The Bear” Tour will begin the annual five-day tour of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Traverse City, Leelanau County and Frankfort areas. Each day, cyclists will ride a looped route that starts from their base camp at Indigo Bluffs RV Park south of the Glen Lakes. They will visit the following areasto enjoy the scenery, restaurants and tourist attractions of northwest Michigan.

“M-22 is all about the northern Michigan lifestyle,” an excited Matt Wiesen says while standing behind the wine counter at his and wife Katy’s new apparel store and tasting room in Glen Arbor. “It’s about a glass of wine on the boat, beaches, bonfires and a laid-back attitude.”
