Nation of immigrants: Sleeping Bear naturalization ceremony rose above caustic political debate

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore hosted a naturalization ceremony on July 21, 2016, for 20 new United States citizens, who hail from 15 different countries. They are white, black and brown; their names and native country religions are Protestant, Catholic and Muslim. Like American immigrants for the last 238 years, they are hardworking, creative and devoted to their new nation.

Sleeping Bear Dunes naturalization ceremony canceled

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore was scheduled to host a naturalization ceremony today, June 11, for new United States citizens. The ceremony was canceled by United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), along with all routine in-person services, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore to host Naturalization Ceremony

Upcoming Event

Candidates from numerous countries will become new citizens during a ceremony at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore on Thursday, July 21, 2016. This year, 100 ceremonies will be held in parks nationwide to commemorate the National Park Service’s Centennial and invite a new generation of Americans to national parks. The National Park Service and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services have an official partnership that encourages both agencies to co-host naturalization ceremonies in these special places set aside for public enjoyment and historical commemoration.
