Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore received an Open OutDoors for Kids grant from the National Park Foundation (NPF). Thanks to this grant, schools can join in for free. In the classroom, students will design, build, and test a small beach cleanup machine. These activities help students learn Next Generation Science Standards.

The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore enjoys a healthy relationship with a nonprofit group of local volunteers, Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes, which has pitched in to keep trails and parking lots plowed, collect trash and keep toilets clean and accessible during the federal government shutdown.

Do you like to play in the snow? Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is recruiting up to two winter interns to assist with snowshoe field trips and weekend hikes. The internship will start in early January and last until mid-March. Work includes presenting curriculum-based lessons and activities on topics such as winter ecology, animal adaptations, snow science, and National Park Service mission and history.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore was selected to receive a 2017 field trip grant from the National Park Foundation (NPF), the official charity of America’s national parks. This grant will allow fourth grade classes the opportunity to explore the National Lakeshore on a snowshoeing adventure for free and learn about winter ecology, snow science, and more in a hands-on, experiential format. This grant, part of the NPF’s Open OutDoors for Kids program, supports the Every Kid in a Park program.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore joins parks, programs and partners across the country to encourage everyone to find their park and share their stories online at FindYourPark.com. Launched on Monday, March 30, by the National Park Service and the National Park Foundation, Find Your Park is a public awareness and education campaign celebrating the milestone centennial anniversary of the National Park Service in 2016 and setting the stage for its second century of service.
