Jazz, funk, pop, soul conclude Homestead’s Music on the Mountain

The last of the season’s outdoor music shows are upon us. Music on the Mountain at The Homestead concludes its season with East Bay Drive and special guest Miriam Pico on Sept. 18, while Leelanau Uncaged in Northport takes place Sept. 27. East Bay Drive is a quintet of music veterans from the Traverse City area who bring together varying interests in soul, jazz and funk. Think the Rippingtons, the Crusaders, Fourplay and others of that ilk. The core quartet of David Chown (keyboards), Rick Kiehle (guitar), John Paul (bass) and Alex Wyant (drums) has been joined by new official member Ryan Critchfield (saxophone), formerly a regular guest.

Music on the Mountain returns to The Homestead

This summer, the sounds of blues, bluegrass, pop, reggae, rock and jazz will once again fill the air at The Homestead. The popular Music on the Mountain series is returning for the first time since before the pandemic. The shows will take place at 7 p.m. on alternate Thursdays, beginning July 10 with the Luke Winslow-King duo. They will take place at the top of Bay Mountain, the resort’s ski hill. Patrons can ride the ski lift to the top. The backdrop, with the sun setting behind the sparkling waters of Sleeping Bear Bay, is like no other in the area.

Miriam Pico’s joy in music

If it seems like Miriam Pico has been performing around the area for a few years, you’re right. But you may be surprised to learn it’s been nearly two decades. Pico is at least. “Next year is the 20th anniversary … of my first album,” she says, almost wonderingly. “It’s a big deal. That’s when I considered myself to be a professional, with no other job.” That may not be entirely accurate, as she’s worked in numerous settings or jobs over the past two decades. But they’ve all had music at the forefront. From a longstanding duo with pianist David Chown to current work with her husband, guitarist Ryan Younce, her child-focused “Mindful + Musical with Miriam Pico” and solo shows, she’s made music her life. “I’ve been able to make a living. I’m thankful. It’s not easy,” she says.

Sold out holiday concert returns to Suttons Bay Theatre

On Saturday, Dec. 16, at 7 pm, Miriam Pico and David Chown will return to The Bay Theatre in Suttons Bay after last year’s sold out event for an evening of joy, reflection, and wonderful memories as they entertain the audience in their unique style, with original arrangements of Holiday favorites. They’ll be accompanied by a full ensemble of fellow instrumentalists and singers, making this a night to remember.

Parenting Communities of Leelanau hosts family event with Miriam Pico

Parenting Communities of Leelanau County announced it will host its first community-wide event for families with young children. This fun, family-friendly event is happening Wednesday, September 1, at Herman Park pavilion in Suttons Bay. A simple pizza dinner will be offered from 5:30-6 pm, followed by Miriam Pico who will perform a bilingual interactive music program for kids and families from 6-7 pm.
