The League of Women Voters Leelanau County (LWVLC) will host a presentation titled “A Great Start for All Children” featuring Mary Manner at noon on Wednesday, May 7, in the Leelanau County Government Center. Manner will discuss the Great Start Collaborative’s work on the 5 to ONE project, a rural model for an early childhood system of resources across a five-county service area that includes Leelanau County.

The Glen Arbor Art Association (GAAA) Artist-in-Residence (AIR) Program offers two-week residencies for practicing artists who would like the opportunity for focused, creative exploration. Residencies are considered in writing, photography, sculpture, fiber, ceramics, music, painting, philosophy and creative research. Public presentations are an opportunity for the artist-residents to talk about their experience in Leelanau County, and share insights into their residency.

Next Wednesday, April 2, the League of Women Voters of Leelanau County will host a public forum at noon at the Leelanau County Government Center to discuss the risks of oil and gas development in Michigan and potential solutions. Dr. Christopher Grobbel of Grobbel Environmental and Planning Associates will address the following topics.

Leelanau County oral historian/author Tom Van Zoeren has published a new book pertaining to Michigan history. Coauthored with 92-year-old native of the subject area, Alma Holwerda, and published to benefit the Holland (Michigan) Museum, A Farm Album from Michigan’s Dutch Colony: An Oral and Photographic History is based on oral histories, letters, and other historic sources, and is illustrated with historic photographs.

The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore wilderness bill passed the House of Representatives yesterday on a voice vote and will head to President Obama’s desk, where he is expected to sign it into law. Congressman Dan Benishek (a Republican representing Northern Michigan) championed the legislation in the House and expects it to be signed within the next couple weeks. Democratic Senator Carl Levin co-sponsored companion legislation that passed the Senate last year.

The Leelanau Conservancy has been presented with an exciting opportunity to gain recognition and raise money on a national level. The Michigan-based company Moosejaw Mountaineering has partnered with Patagonia and CrowdRise to help 20 organizations round up donations and earn a chance to be awarded additional funding. Plus, donors get a chance to win $500 worth of gear from Patagonia. The 10,000 Challenge Thing ends March 13.

Nearly a month after his much anticipated visit and inspection of Sugar Loaf resort on Feb. 5, Leelanau County inspector Steve Haugen has published the official violation report in the form of a letter he mailed both to former owner Kate Wickstrom and to current owner Remo Polseli (through his company, Rock Investment Advisors, LLC).

Mark Evans is nothing if not determined. The eco-tourism guide and explorer has led expeditions deep into the wild to view grizzly bears in British Columbia and whales in Antarctica, and has developed canopy walks in the Australian outback. Evans, who was raised in South Africa and lives in Canada, now has his eyes set on Leelanau County’s forests and the arboreal view of the Glen Lakes.

Eighteen Leelanau County-based businesses will receive grants of $1,000 or $1,250 through the county’s Business Grant Program. The 18 businesses were selected from more than 60 applications received by a review committee charged with dispersing remaining funds from the recent dissolution of the Leelanau County Economic Development Corp. in the form of small grants to county-based businesses.

In a rare and extensive interview with the Glen Arbor Sun today, Remo Polselli admitted that he is the owner of Sugar Loaf resort, through his share in Rok Investments LLC. Polselli did not specify the extent of his ownership, or who else is involved in the corporation, but added that Liko Smith has no — nor has had any — part of Rok Investments.
