As the month of June came to a close, four new family bunkhouses were added to Indigo Bluffs RV Park & Resort in Empire. With a queen bed and four bunks, the new 320 square foot accommodations sleep six, a number that campground owner Gary Becker described as “magic” in hospitality. “The three generation vacation,” he said. “Grandparents, parents, children. Figure two plus two plus two.” Beyond providing an enjoyable place to stay, the campground is concerned with “preserving and defending the opportunity for families to come here,” said Becker. Which is precisely why, at the height of the tourist season in July, the bunkhouses are under $130 a night.

For a few seasons now, campers at Indigo Bluffs RV Park and Resort on M-72 east of Empire have enjoyed a free-to-download app that details things to do in the area. It highlights everything from hiking trails to wineries, restaurants to farmstands, and sorts the attractions not alphabetically, but instead by distance (in miles) from the campground. A “favorites” button was added most recently for users to easily save the things they’re interested in, “which is way easier to work with instead of a billion screenshots from Google,” said Gary Becker, the owner of Indigo Bluffs.

Phase One of the Heritage Trail, a paved, 10-foot-wide multi-use trail, which runs from the Dune Climb to Glen Arbor, is the first leg of what supporters envision will one day be a 27-mile trail from the Leelanau-Benzie County Line running north to Good Harbor Bay. Though it has been operational for over a month, the Heritage Trail’s official grand opening is scheduled for June 20 at 1:30 p.m. at the Sleeping Bear Dune Climb.
