Art, Wine and Delectables Warm the Night

The Glen Arbor Art Association, The Homestead resort and the Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail will again team up to offer Art From Michigan’s Wine Country on Friday, Feb. 7, from 6-8 p.m. at The Homestead’s Mountain Flowers Lodge. Now in its sixth year, this fun winter event kicks off Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail’s Taste the Passion weekend. The Friday night GAAA benefit features wine from Leelanau wineries, original art exhibits and sales by local artists and a small plates menu designed by Chef Piombo.

Straight as the Pine chronicles history of Leelanau School

Northport resident Michael Huey has written a new book, Straight as the Pine, Sturdy as the Oak, a history of Camp Leelanau for Boys, the Leelanau School, and the Homestead resort, from their inception in 1921 until 1963. These institutions shaped Glen Arbor during the 20th century, and continue today. The publisher is Vienna, Austria-based Schlebrügge. The 500-page hardcover book, which includes 300 vintage images, will soon be available for purchase at the Cottage Bookshop in Glen Arbor.

Glen Arbor Fourth of July parade celebrates 50 years

The Glen Arbor Fourth of July parade, which next Thursday will celebrate half a century of annual patriotic celebrations, has come a long way since fire trucks were wrapped in primitive, spray-painted bedsheets. This year’s parade leaves Glen Haven at noon and typically arrives in Glen Arbor around 12:30. Spectators are encouraged to stake out a spot by mid-morning, as this event attracts hordes of people.

Guitarist and composer Ron Getz kicks off the series on Thursday, June 27. He has performed with a variety of jazz greats, including Arthur Blythe, Billy Hart, John Scofield, Steve Grossman, Bill Evans, Branford Marsalis and Marvin “Smitty” Smith (from the Jay Leno Tonight Show Band).

Glen Arbor part-time resident John Farah’s account of Boston Marathon tragedy

Glen Arbor residents might recognize John Farah. The dentist from Ann Arbor owns a condominium at the Homestead Resort and likes to jog a 15-mile route around Big Glen Lake during his summer visits up north. On Monday in Boston, Farah was maintaining a solid pace, despite nagging small injuries that had interrupted his training cycle of late. He was hoping to finish the marathon at 4 hours and 15 minutes, and then greet his wife Jackie and her daughter Erin at the finish line. The plan was to take a train to Erin’s apartment so Farah could shower and change, and then head to Logan Airport for a flight back to Detroit.

Nationally recognized artist teaches in Glen Arbor

The Glen Arbor Art Association has invited Minnesota artist Andy Evansen to teach a workshop titled “Creating Impressionistic Landscapes in Plein Air”. During the four day workshop, Evansen will provide a combination of studio and plein air instruction, October 15-18 at The Homestead Resort near Glen Arbor.

Homestead hosts magnificent music and spectacular view

The setting overlooking Lake Michigan at The Homestead’s Bay Mountain is spectacular and the chair lift ride up is invigorating, but the star of the show is the Paul Keller Jazz Quintet featuring vocalist Sarah D’Angelo. An offshoot of Ann Arbor’s popular Paul Keller Orchestra, the quintet will perform jazz classics such as Goodman, Gershwin and others on Thursday, July 26 at 7 p.m.
