The Leelanau Historical Society, in partnership with Here:Say Storytelling, will present Meet Me at the Loaf: A Celebration of Sugar Loaf in Stories. The Jan. 29 event at Solon Township Hall near Cedar will feature memories and voices connected to one of Leelanau County’s most beloved landmarks: Sugar Loaf Mountain. Doors open at 5:30 pm, offering guests the chance to reconnect with old friends, neighbors, and fellow “Sugar Loafers.” The storytelling program begins at 6:30.

I’d been in the water for five hours before I began to hallucinate. It was subtle at first. Kind of like at Thanksgiving dinner when you eat too much, sit on the couch and start to go into that dream state where you can kind-of still hear everyone’s voices around you, but you’re also probably drooling. It was Labor Day, and while 40,000 people walked across the Mackinaw Bridge, 80 of us were swimming underneath it, writes Matt Soderquist, who shared this story at the Leelanau Clean Water and Here:Say storytelling event “Bubbling Up” on Aug. 4 at the Lively NeighborFood Market.

Join Leelanau Clean Water (LCW) and Here:Say Storytelling on Monday, Aug. 4, at 7:30 pm at the Lively NeighborFood Market on M-72 for an evening of live storytelling featuring true, first-person stories that celebrate water, in all its forms, anywhere in the world. This free show features an engaging collection of stories from LCW storytelling shows staged in 2022 and 2024. Leelanau Clean Water is a nonprofit whose mission is to restore, protect and sustain water resources, promote public awareness of issues with environmental and economic importance, and provide accurate information to assist public participation in water resource decisions.

Come enjoy “Bubbling Up,” an evening of tales of water told live on-stage at the Little Traverse Inn on Saturday, April 27, at 7 pm. A $10 voluntary donation at the door goes to support the nonprofit Leelanau Clean Water. Emcee Taylor Moore will invite six storytellers to share true personal stories about water.

Housing North

The public is invited to attend “Close to Home,” a fundraising event held by the Northwest Michigan Rural Housing Partnership organization Housing North in collaboration with Here:Say Storytelling on Thursday, June 8, from 6-9 pm at the Orchard View barn at Jacob’s Farm on M-72 west of Traverse City.

The Leland Township Library, the Suttons Bay-Bingham District Library and the Friendship Community Center have teamed up to bring Here:Say Storytelling to Leelanau County. On Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 7 pm, six storytellers will take the stage at the Friendship Community Center in Suttons Bay to tell true stories from their lives. The theme for the evening is “Beyond Expectations” and will be interpreted differently by each storyteller.

Social distancing practices have changed the way Michiganders do everything, including bird watching. On Saturday, May 9, at 10 am, Michigan Legacy Art Park at Crystal Mountain Resort and Here:Say Storytelling will team up with artists, musicians, and writers for an online celebration of winged wonders. The event features special guest Joyce Bahle reading poetry by her late friend, colleague, fellow bird lover, writer Jim Harrison.
