Glen Arbor Wines hosts Mother’s Day art show, cheese demo, live music

Celebrate Mother’s Day weekend on Saturday, May 11, at Glen Arbor Wines from 4-7 p.m.  The business on Lake Street, just north of M-22, will feature a mini-art show, “Reflections of Sleeping Bear,” where guests can meet the talented exhibitors: artists Linda Alice Dewey, Morgan Fisher, Maryann Barnes and photographer Eric Raymond. Local photographer Gracie Dickinson will also show her vintage maps and photos of Leelanau County. In addition, Leelanau Cheese will demonstrate the delicious art of melting locally made raclette from 4-6 p.m., and musician John Piatek performs from 5-7 p.m.

Six women photographers and their love of Leelanau

This is the story of six female photographers who fell in love with the Leelanau Peninsula and found a way to share that love through their photos. In our July 11 issue we profiled Jane Fortune of Leland for her work discovering female artists of the Italian Renaissance, many of whom are described in her book, Invisible Women. Fortune’s work, for which she just received an Emmy, inspired our effort to showcase the work of female photographers on the Leelanau Peninsula.

Leelanau County turns 150 years old

Historical Feature

This week, under little fanfare, Leelanau County celebrated it’s 150th birthday. That is, on Feb. 27, 1863, the Michigan State Legislature create the county of Leelanau with three townships — Centerville, Glen Arbor and Leelanau. The peninsula that looks like the mitten’s pinky finger had previously been part of Grand Traverse County (along with what is now Benzie County).
