The Envirothon team at Glen Lake Schools is raising money for an 8kW, adjustable solar array at school. They will kick off an innovative fundraising drive based on the nonprofit clean energy crowdfunding website SolaRISE at halftime during tonight’s varsity basketball game against Leland.
Sometimes, when riparian landowners on inland lakes feel their rights are being infringed upon or they sense potential danger, they feel the need to call in the law. Most often they will call the sheriff’s department.
Where do the rights of boaters end and those of riparians—who own inland waterfront property—begin? The laws can be confusing, and it appears that many, including some law enforcement officers, might be misinformed.
If you were at least 12 years old in 1981, lived in the United States, and were hooked up to major media, you surely heard about it. After a decade’s hiatus, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel agreed to reunite for a free New York City concert to save Central Park, which was in danger of being closed. In an effort to save it, the city put on a series of concerts.
In the shade of the old locusts at lovely Dorsey Park on Little Glen Lake lies the original Dorsey cabin. Built around 1860, it’s one of the oldest structures, if not the oldest building, in Leelanau County. On any given day, from April to October, you might find the cabin door open. There, you’ll see an 83-year-old man working at his scroll saw, creating beautiful, ornate items. He gives away everything he makes.
Glen Arbor’s annual mid-winter event begins 7 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17, with Perch Fishing on the Glen Lakes, followed by the Contest & Awards plus a Chili-Cook off beginning at Noon at Boonedocks in Glen Arbor.
Tom and Phyl Davis have been part of the Glen Lake community since the 1950s. It started with a cottage on Big Glen Lake. Each year the then young family spent summer vacations in a rented cottage that was part of Peppler Glen View Resort near Old Settlers Picnic Grounds. Their three boys learned how to sail and waterski, honed their swimming skills, and fished to enjoy occasional family fish fries featuring the day’s catch.
It’s the event the community has been waiting for The Glen Lake Community Library’s Home Tour includes five diverse residences that span the architectural sphere, from an old log cabin on Inspiration Point built in the 1920s to a “green” home built two years ago. These and three other unique homes will be open to the community for the tour. One of the homes is a gorgeous farmhouse complete with barns and gardens, all accessible. There is a beautiful Nantucket-style country home on Big Glen Lake, and a charming summer cottage on Little Glen. Something for everyone, to be sure.
Come One, Come All to the community July 4 Flag Raising program in honor of the 241st birthday of America’s adoption of the Declaration of Independence, to be held Tuesday, July 4, at Old Settlers Picnic Grounds. This patriotic tradition has been organized by the Glen Lake Woman’s Club since 1970.
