Carpe Diem. Seize the day. That was the motto of the 1994 state champion Glen Lake football team. Twenty-five years later, ’94 coach Bill Hollenbeck encourages Jerry Angers and the ’19 Laker gridiron squad to do the same. Glen Lake plays Monroe St. Mary today at 4:30 pm in the Division 6 state championship game at Ford Field in Detroit.

The former Glen Arbor Township Cemetery, located in the backwoods behind Boonedocks, has been buried in a tangle of trees since the brutal storm of August 2015. The place is dear to me because my first book, Aaron’s Crossing, began its life and death saga when I sensed a ghost there.

Buckets of Rain, a Leelanau-based nonprofit which aims to “support the rebuilding of Detroit by transforming blighted areas into agricultural oases” will hold a work bee on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 8:30 a.m. at the Empire United Methodist Church. Volunteers will make smoothies using locally picked apples and produce donated by Kroger.

A special holiday tradition continues on Nov. 17 as the Glen Lake Library in Empire kicks off its annual call for children’s books. The Friends of the Library, in cooperation with Glen Lake School, Parenting Communities and Head Start, are once again collecting donations of new children’s books for children whose families are in need of assistance this holiday season.

The event was sponsored by Cherry Capital Foods, Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District, and the Groundwork Center for Resilient Communities, which celebrated 15 years of catalyzing the farm to school movement in northern Michigan.

Audrey Smith has been accepted into ArtPrize, where she will hang three of her paintings—collectively titled “Golden Africa”—in one of the world’s most popular art events. ArtPrize takes place Sept.20-Oct. 8 in Grand Rapids.
