Glen Lake Community School hosts Apple Crunch and Farm to School celebration

Food/Organic Living, Upcoming Event

Oct. 25 joint event sponsored by Groundwork Center, Cherry Capital Foods and TBAISD

From staff reports

Thousands of children and adults statewide will crunch into fresh Michigan apples on Wednesday, Oct. 25, in the fifth annual Michigan Apple Crunch, sponsored by Cherry Capital Foods. Glen Lake Community School will host its Apple Crunch event at 1:30 p.m., located at 3375 W. Burdickville Rd., near Maple City. The Apple Crunch event will be followed at 2 p.m. in the auditorium by a celebration of regional farm to school success stories.

Every October, the Michigan Apple Crunch invites Michiganders to get excited together about our state’s favorite fall fruit. It’s also a great way to support local apple growers and our regional economy. Since October is also National Farm to School Month, the Apple Crunch is a farm to school month highlight for students, teachers and staff at many Michigan schools.

This month the Groundwork Center is celebrating 15 years of catalyzing the farm to school movement in northern Michigan. Groundwork wants to share success stories to motivate and inspire other communities, and to thank its partners. Last month Groundwork published a farm to school report and produced a video celebrating its work helping this region get more healthy, locally grown food in school lunchrooms. The Farm to School celebration at 2 p.m. is a chance to hear directly from many of key partners, including farmers, school food service directors, local food hubs, and school administrators.
