Thirty-three paintings and photographs selected from the Glen Arbor Art Association (GAAA) Artist-in-Residence Collection (2008-present) will be exhibited at the Elizabeth Lane Oliver Center for the Arts in Frankfort, Oct. 21-Nov. 26. The show opens with a reception Oct. 21, 5-7 p.m. at the Oliver Art Center, 132 Coast Guard Road.
The Glen Arbor Art Association’s Readers’ Theater announces the cast for its October production of an adaptation entitled Radio Days. The production is actually two playlets, with the first being a comedy and the second a mystery. A broadcast from the NBC program The Fabulous Dr. Tweedydeals with a bumbling college professor and a young child left by her father into his care. A CBS program Inner Sanctum provides the second offering, which was called “The Voice On The Wire”.

The Glen Arbor Art Association invites artists to submit original paintings for the annual Manitou Music Festival poster competition. Deadline for the 2017 poster competition is October 1. The limited edition posters are hugely popular and sold through the art association and selected shops and art galleries. Competition is open to anyone who is a current member of the Glen Arbor Art Association. Subject matter must be appropriate to the Manitou Music Festival. That is, work that represents recognizable area scenes. All artwork must be original and previously unpublished. There is no entry fee. Detailed guidelines and a submission form is available at GlenArborArt.org.
The Manitou Music Festival’s annual choral event highlights the Summer Singers, an all-volunteer group of 50 singers from around Leelanau County. The concert, directed by Empire resident Dana Allen, will perform traditional classics like “Bound for the Promised Land” with four-hand piano and Mark Hayes’ arrangement of “Dry Bones”.
On Saturday evening, Aug. 6, artists gathered for a thank-you dinner given by the Glen Arbor Art Association (GAAA) before the Plein Air Paint Out Wet Painting Sale Reception. Art lovers began to arrive at 5 p.m. to line-up to view the art work that culminated the weekend’s events. The GAAA was filled with over 300 art patrons and artists enjoying a lovely evening.

The Plein Air Weekend, organized by the Glen Arbor Art Association, has become a signature summer art event attracting plein air artists and art lovers from throughout Michigan and the Midwest. Three painting events and two art sales will highlight the paintings of over 100 artists who will paint throughout the Glen Lake area Thursday night, Friday and Saturday. Competition for a spot in the main event, Saturday’s Plein Air Paint Out, is always keen and this year’s event filled in just 90 minutes in late March.
Award-winning essayist Kathleen Stocking will discuss her new memoir, The Long Arc of the Universe — Travels Beyond the Pale, on July 28 at 7 p.m. at the Glen Arbor Art Association, 6031 S. Lake St., Glen Arbor. The summer edition of the GAAA’s “Talk About Art” series brings the Leelanau County writer back to her home turf to discuss the world travels that became this new work of creative nonfiction. “Talk About Art”, now in its eighth year, is a series of free conversational interviews with area artists.
