Art classes for children offered in Glen Arbor

Children ages 6-9 have been having fun with paint and other art materials at the Glen Arbor Art Association (GAAA) this winter. Another four-week series of after-school classes will take place on Wednesdays in March. Children enjoy the camaraderie of other young creators and they go home with a finished project. Snack and art supplies are included in the $45 tuition fee. Tuition assistance is available. Glen Lake students may ride the bus to the Art Association after school and parents pick them up at the GAAA at 5:15 p.m.

Glen Arbor Art Association Readers’ Theater perform Motherhood Out Loud

“Motherhood Out Loud” is coming to Glen Arbor from off-Broadway on Friday, Feb. 27, Sat., Feb. 28 and Sunday, March 1. This delightful play encompasses the hilarity and struggles of motherhood. Harriett Mittelberger directs the cast, which includes Karen and Peter Van Nort, Susan McConnell, Teddy House, Rhonda Richards, Mary Sharry, Linda Dewey, Pete La Placa and Mike Duwe, each playing multiple roles. “Motherhood Out Loud” has mature themes and is rated 14+ for the public. For all you mothers, grandmothers, daughters and the men who love them, this play is for you.

Glen Arbor Art Association’s Readers’ Theater holds auditions

Readers’ Theater is casting “Motherhood Out Loud” on Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. at the Glen Arbor Art Association, at 6031 S. Lake Street in Glen Arbor. The cast consists of one to two men and four to 12 women, directed by Harriett Mittelberger. This off-Broadway play will have three performances Feb. 27, 28 and March 1. It is a valentine to all women and the men who love and respect them encompassing a series of monologues and scenes that demonstrate the hilarity and pain of motherhood. As a readers’ theater format, actors will read from the script so there is nothing to memorize. For further information call 231-334-6112.

I’ve fielded the “Whaddaya do up there all winter?” question. A lot. I’m a seasonal employee at a retail establishment in Glen Arbor. My place of employment is visited during the summer and fall months by out-of-towners, many of whom express a reasonable curiosity about life UpNorth after summer’s omnipresent sunny-ness fades. One such inquisitor was completely sold on Glen Arbor in the summer. But the winter? Not so much, she said.

Glen Arbor Art Association announces Readers’ Theater cast selection for “A Christmas Carol”

The Glen Arbor Art Association announced the cast for its December Readers’ Theater production of the play “A Christmas Carol”. All of the performers and staging assistants are locals to Leelanau County. Several of the cast members will play multiple roles, including four students from Glen Lake School.

Readers’ Theater announces dates for My Man Godfrey

The Glen Arbor Art Association’s Readers’ Theater announces its fall play selection is My Man Godfrey—a light-hearted, Depression-era comedy in which a zany heiress tries to help a homeless man by making him the family’s butler. Performances will be held Friday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 19 at 3 p.m. at the Glen Arbor Art Association building, 6031 S. Lake St. in Glen Arbor. Cast and crew include Peter Van Nort, Trish Vanderploeg, Karen Van Nort, Teddy House, Rob McWatt, Ron Smith, John Rentenbach, Karen Ford, Ken Shultz and Bob House. The play is being directed by Celeste Crouch, Assistant Director Josephine Zara with additional help from Mike Duwe and Harriet Mittelberger. Watercolorist Andy Evansen to teach at The Homestead

Andy Evansen, renowned watercolorist from Minnesota, returns to Glen Arbor to teach a four-day workshop sponsored by the Glen Arbor Art Association at The Homestead resort, Oct. 13-16. Born in Wisconsin in 1965, Evansen was educated at the University of Minnesota and has studied with watercolorists Skip Lawrence, Eric Weigardt and Alvaro Castagnet.
