Chasing Snow: Northern Michigan ski resorts adapt to a warmer world

It’s been a soggy couple of years for skiers and snowboarders. So, what keeps us coming back? From crockpot warming stations to cutting-edge snow-making technology, Northern Michigan ski resorts pull out all the stops to keep winter lovers happy—and stay one step ahead of Mother Nature. Resorts need about 72 hours of temperatures that stay below 28 degrees to lay a base and open terrain for skiing. “The ski industry in Michigan happens because of snowmaking. There’s no other way to say it,” said Ben Doornbos, general manager at Nub’s Nob near Harbor Springs. “Our product is the snow.”

Sleeping Bear Gateways Council holds Aug. 25 annual meeting

The Sleeping Bear Gateways Council (SBGC) is hosting its annual meeting as a virtual event on Zoom at 5 p.m. on Thursday, August 25. The session will feature updates on the group’s projects as well as comments from leadership of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. All individuals with interest in the Sleeping Bear area are invited to join the meeting.

Lou Batori, still skiing at age 102

Local Personality

Think you’re in shape for your age? Forget about it! Glen Arbor’s centenarian + 2, Hungarian-born Lou Batori still hits the slopes every winter (and occasionally bikes around the Glen Lakes during the summer).

Today Batori visited Crystal Mountain, and the folks at the Benzie County resort were kind enough to post photos on Facebook. You can view them here.
