Local businesses are showing signs of life, despite the global coronavirus pandemic and statewide shutdown. Art’s Tavern and Blu in Glen Arbor are both open for curbside service, as are Leland’s Riverside Inn and Empire’s Friendly Tavern.

Since most Leelanau County businesses remain closed to diners, shoppers and pedestrians, we at the Glen Arbor Sun are forced to rethink how, where, and perhaps when, to publish and distribute our print editions once the season begins in mid-May. We invite our readers to offer their feedback and answer the following questions.

Much of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is closed until July 1, to slow the spread of COVID-19, and Park Rangers are patrolling popular spots within the Lakeshore—particular on sunny days—both to provide education and guidance and, when necessary, to issue tickets for trespassing, Chief Ranger Phil Akers told the Glen Arbor Sun.

Organizers of the M22 Challenge announced today that they will cancel the popular annual run-bike-paddle triathlon within the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and around the Glen Lakes. This year’s M22 Challenge was scheduled for Saturday, June 13. Next year’s event is scheduled for June 12, 2021.

The Glen Arbor Arts Center seeks entries for two upcoming exhibitions, Power Tools and Art In The Time Of Coronavirus. The exhibitions are scheduled for September 11–November 5.

Northwoods Hardware in Glen Arbor has a supplier who has modified their production line to produce face shields that meet Johns Hopkins Medical School and Munson specifications. Face shields are an essential part of the PPE required in hospitals, however there is a nation-wide shortage, and there is a critical need for them at Munson Healthcare.

Nathaniel Feldpausch—a firefighter and emergency medical technician (EMT) with the Glen Lake Fire Department since 2018—is among 19 first responders across Leelanau County who could get sent out with extra protective gear on COVID-19 medical calls.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced this morning that she is extending the state’s “Stay Home, Stay Safe” executive order until May 15 in order to slow the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. The order was set to expire at the end of April. However, she will ease restrictions on some activities that may make life, commerce and recreation easier on many northern Michiganders.
