Don’t miss the third annual M22-Challenge Saturday morning. This year’s competitors will run 2.5 miles up the Dune Climb, bike 17 miles around the Glen Lakes, and paddle 2.5 miles in Little Glen Lake. Due to rising demand, founders Matt and Keegan Myers opened up this M-22 Challenge to 550 athletes. Watch videos of last year’s race below.

The Las-Vegas Review Journal reports that Eneliko Sean “Liko” Smith — the enigmatic former Samoan boxer who attempted to acquire Sugar Loaf resort last year — was arrested last night in Nevada for driving under the influence. Liko Smith is being held under a no-bail warrant and could face extradition to El Dorado County, Calif., where he reportedly left behind more than $100,000 in unpaid room taxes.

Scientific discoveries in nuclear science, practical tips in astronomy, and the importance of Dark Sky Parks and outdoor lighting will be discussed during the Traverse Astronomy, Philosophy and Energy (TAPE) forum at 7 p.m., June 7, at Northwestern Michigan College’s Milliken Auditorium.

The Legacy Award is bestowed annually by Michigan Legacy Art Park to recognize those who have made a positive impact on Michigan’s arts, history or culture. William and Helen Milliken will be in attendance to receive the 2011 Legacy Award during this year’s Legacy Gala on August 20 at Crystal Mountain Resort & Spa in Thompsonville, MI.

A native son from Marquette, Michigan, and Art Professor at Marquette’s Northern Michigan University, Michael Letts will be presenting a talk at the Glen Arbor Art Association (GAAA) on Thursday, June 9 at 7:30 p.m.

Members of the Glen Lake Garden Club’s Glen Arbor Beautification Committee braved a chilly morning on May 25 to plant the community flower barrels and planters in Glen Arbor in preparation for Memorial Weekend. This project is supported by the garden club, Glen Arbor Township and Glen Lake Chamber of Commerce. In addition to the Glen Arbor planters, the garden club maintains the gardens at the Glen Lake Community Library.

Northern Michigan is “bear country” and seeing one of these magnificent creatures may be a highlight of your visit to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore) this summer as bear sightings have increased, particularly near the Platte River Campground. In 2010, Park Rangers received over two dozen reports of bears and bear “signs” in and adjacent to the park.
