Glen Lake Library sponsors Asparagus Poetry contest
Upcoming EventAfter a one-year hiatus, the Glen Lake Library will once again host a poetry contest as part of the 2015 Empire Asparagus Festival. Submit your asparagus-inspired verse by Thursday, May 14. Poems can be dropped off at the library; mailed to Glen Lake Library, PO Box 325, Empire, MI 49630; or emailed to info@glenlakelibrary.net. Be sure to include your contact information with your poem. Contestants are encouraged to come present their own poetry at the reading on Saturday, May 16 at 2:00 pm. Prizes will be awarded in both adult (age 18+) and children’s categories.

Dispatch from AfarEmpire native Ella Skrocki recently returned from Nepal. She writes these words following the terrible earthquake on Saturday that has claimed the lives of thousands. “After the network in Nepal came back this morning, I finally was able to get through to Angnima, the mentor I lived with for two months while studying in Nepal’s rural villages. Angnima was hit by falling rock while fleeing Langtang as the trees and land caved in around him. He and the rest of “our” family is alive.”
Glen Arbor Art Association Readers’ Theater holds May 6 auditions for “God Bless the Child”
Upcoming EventGlen Arbor Art Association’s Readers’ Theater will hold auditions Wednesday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m. The play “God Bless the Child” is an actor’s dream. A drama, set in rural Wisconsin, it is the story of Naomi and Oliver working on their second/third marriage with their newly blended families. Their conflicts end with unexpected results. The characters are: Naomi 60s – 70s, Oliver – 60s – 70s, Jamie O’Neill, Naomi’s grandson – 27, Carey O’Neill, his wife – 26, Porter Chapman, Oliver’s son, Cal Chapman, Oliver’s grandson.
