Smoked out: Friday events canceled in Leelanau

News

Photo: The Beach Bards Bonfire storytelling, performance and poetry circle at The Leelanau School has been canceled tonight.

From staff reports

The catastrophic wildfires in Minnesota and Canada, and resulting poor air quality over Michigan, has prompted local businesses and organizations to cancel the following events in Leelanau County today. Those cancelations include: Tour de Tart, Empire Anchor Day’s Friday night movie, Beach Bards bonfire, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore ranger programs, Lake Street Studios today, Glen Arbor Arts Center at Thoreson Farm Studio, and Leelanau Conservancy outdoor events. We’ll update this list throughout the day and the weekend.

• Tour de TART, a fundraiser for TART Trails, has been canceled this afternoon.

• Empire Anchor Day movie at the Town Hall, canceled. Anchor Day events on Saturday are still on, as scheduled.

• Beach Bards Bonfire at The Leelanau School, canceled. The Beach Bards will hold one more Friday night poetry and storytelling circle, on Aug. 21.

• Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore: all ranger programs have been moved indoors to the Philip A. Hart Visitor Center in Empire; the Glen Haven museums also remain closed today.

• Lake Street Studios in Glen Arbor: all galleries closed today. BUT the art opening for Margo Burian at the Center Gallery will take place tonight at 6 pm.

• Glen Arbor Arts Center has closed the Thoreson Farm Studio in the Port Oneida Rural Historic District through the weekend.

• Leelanau Conservancy canceled all outdoor events yesterday, July 16

We’ll update this list throughout the day and the weekend.

Health Department offers free N95 masks

The Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department is currently providing free N95 masks to community members while supplies last due to ongoing air quality concerns. Masks are available at no cost at their Benzie and Leelanau office locations during regular business hours. N95 masks can help reduce exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from wildfire smoke and may be especially beneficial for individuals who are at higher risk from poor air quality.
