Raw sewage discharge into Lake Leelanau prompts public health advisory

From staff reports

The Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department issued a public health advisory on Wednesday, Aug. 13, following an equipment failure during routine maintenance that resulted in the release of raw sewage into Lake Leelanau at the Lake Leelanau DNR Boat Ramp East on East Bingham Road.

Cleanup crews were actively working at the scene to contain and minimize the spill. In response to the incident, the health department was advising residents and visitors to avoid any direct contact with surface water in the area surrounding the Lake Leelanau DNR Boat Ramp East until further notice.

“At this time, we are advising the public to avoid direct contact with surface water within approximately 200 yards of the Lake Leelanau DNR Boat Ramp East, the Health Department wrote on social media on Thursday morning.

Exposure to untreated sewage can pose serious health risks, including gastrointestinal illness and infections from pathogenic bacteria and viruses. Water sampling will be conducted to assess contamination levels. The advisory will remain in effect until testing confirms that the water meets public health safety standards.

“We are working closely with our local and state partners to monitor water conditions and will keep the public informed as more information becomes available,” said Dan Thorell, health officer for the Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department.

Residents are encouraged to follow safety recommendations and stay informed by visiting Bldhd.org and following the department on social media for updates.
