Preserve tours share heritage of Sleeping Bear settlers

From staff reports

Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear, a partner group of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, will offer a variety of tours this summer through the Port Oneida Rural Historic District. Tours will share the history of the agricultural community of the late 1800s and early 1900s. Popular horse and wagon tours are offered Thursdays at 4 and 5:30 p.m., starting July 6. Advanced reservations are required by calling 231-334-6103. Cost is $20 per adult, $12 per child ages 4-12, and free for children 3 and under. For more information, please visit www.phsb.org. Port Oneida Guided Auto Tours, in individual cars or car pool, are every Wednesday, June 28-Aug. 16 from 10 a.m.-noon. The tours visit four farms to learn about the general history of Port Oneida, history of the farms, and how the design and function of the buildings supported the farm. Both tours start from the Olsen Farm located on M-22 just 4 miles north of Glen Arbor and west of Port Oneida Road.

“Port Oneida: Tragedies of the Times” is an evening program from 7-9 p.m. on July 7, 14, 21 and 28. Stories of shipwrecks, accidents, illness, fire, and poor living conditions are explored, while also visiting the cemeteries in Port Oneida. Meet at the Kelderhouse Cemetery at the corner of M-22 and Port Oneida Road.

Women of Port Oneida are impromptu talks at the Olsen Barn on the Heritage Trail. Come by Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Sunday afternoon to see inside the barn and learn in how the women of Port Oneida played a huge role in life on the farm.
