Preserve holds Thoreson Farm plein air event for Port Oneida Fair poster

Upcoming Event

From staff reports

Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear invites artists to the Thoreson Farm in Port Oneida, for a Plein Air Event on Saturday, May 24, from 9 am to 4 pm. The event is to encourage artists to paint and submit artwork of the farm to be considered for the 2025 Port Oneida Fair poster.

A beautiful and picturesque historic farmstead with a farmhouse and several outbuildings, Thoreson Farm was chosen as the ideal subject for this year’s fair poster to honor the recently passed descendent Leonard Thoreson. Thoreson was a legend himself, who grew up on this farm in Port Oneida, now part of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The facts and folklore he provided will forever be told as part of the history of this area through books and archives.

Artists may arrive at any time to create their pieces. An informal meet and greet with light refreshments will take place at 9:30 am. for those interested. Artists should bring their own art supplies, easels, and chairs. Pre-registration is not required and there is no fee for the event or to submit.

Digital submissions of the artist’s original work are due by Tuesday, May 27, at 5 pm. Participants are expected to submit at least one piece, and no more than two pieces, of original artwork for consideration by the Port Oneida Fair Committee. Submissions should be sent by email to PHSBpark2@gmail.com. Email the highest possible quality image (jpg, tif, gif, or png) under 1MB, and include the title, size, and medium of the work.

Artwork should be original and two-dimensional, and it’s best if it is horizontal in orientation approximately two units high by three units wide. Images may be slightly cropped if it’s necessary to fit it to the poster format.

Thoreson Farm is located at 3694 S Thoreson Rd, near Maple City in Port Oneida Rural Historic District, situated southwest of Port Oneida Road.

The Port Oneida Fair, Aug. 8 and 9, is hosted by Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in partnership with Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear, a nonprofit park partner.
