Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear holds 5K Trail Run/Walk
From staff reports
Run for the farms and for historic preservation at Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear’s 5K run/walk in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The fifth annual event supports preservation and interpretation of the Park’s historic resources—farmsteads, log cabins, inns and maritime buildings from the late 1800s and early 1900s on the mainland and Manitou Islands.
The run takes place at the Charles and Hattie Olsen Farm/PHSB’s preservation center in Port Oneida on Saturday, August 2 starting at 8:30 a.m. with the Kid’s ¼ mile Schoolhouse Dash to the historic Port Oneida Schoolhouse and back. The 5K at 9 a.m., is a looped course on the Bayview Trail through the fields and hills of the Port Oneida Rural Historic District with views of farmsteads and Lake Michigan.
Post-run celebration will award first, second, and third places in nine age categories plus an overall male and female winner. Food is provided by Cherry Republic, Oleson Food Stores, Stonehouse Bread, Naturally Nutty Peanut Butter and Anderson’s IGA, with prize-giveaways from local businesses. And a “name the new cow mascot” contest will also be held.
Pre-registration is $27 through July 31 and $32 on August 1 and 2. Register online at Phsb.org, or forms are located at Traverse City Running Fit and Glen Arbor’s M-22 Store and Cherry Republic. Last year, funds supported PHSB’s work on the Katie Shepard Hotel on North Manitou Island, the Boekeloo Lodge near Platte River, the Olsen Farm silage chute, and the Kraitz Log Cabin, the oldest Park structure on the mainland. The group co-sponsors the Port Oneida Fair and offers educational programs. For details and registration information contact 231-334-6103 or visit Phsb.org.
