Northport photo exhibit opens May 24

From staff reports

Northport Arts Association celebrates its annual photo exhibit with an opening reception on May 24 from 5-8 pm at the Village Arts Building in Northport. The exhibit originated in the spring of 2018 and continues to broaden in terms of artists’ involvement and the diversity of work.

The photography exhibit starts on Memorial Day weekend, the same weekend as the popular Cars in the Park event, hence the inclusion of an Automotive award category. The opening reception is free to attend. There will be appetizers and a cash bar available. The exhibit continues through June 11. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 12-4 pm.

This year the Northport Arts Association is featuring more than 30 photographers from across Michigan and beyond. This annual photo event exhibits the creative works of both professional and emerging photographers. The exhibit allows photographers to display up to five images in the gallery. You can expect to see about 150 framed photos on display as well as individual art bins throughout the gallery filled with unframed photos.

The photo subjects will include outstanding landscapes and waterscapes, a unique variety of animal and bird photography, creative modern photography and more. Photos are created using film cameras, digital cameras and cell phones (which are considered mobile photography). All of which are amazing and require a significant amount of technique to present the final perfect image.

Photography judges include Scott Wilson of VADA Color and Carol Greilick from the Traverse Area Camera Club, both recognized photographers. The photography is judged on impact, lighting, story it tells, technical quality, creativity, composition, style, use of color, points of interest and presentation. Awards are presented for Best of Show, People’s Choice, Color Creative, Color General, Black and White/Monochrome, Nature and Automotive (In honor of the Cars in the Park event that will be taking place on Saturday, May 25).

Here’s a list of the talented photographers that will have works on display: Chris Allen, Paul Anderson, Jann Angell, Michele Aucello, Erika Baez, David Battle, Virginia Baxter, Linda Bayer, Robert Bayer, Amber Bingham, Ryan Blessing, Scott Cain, Rick Gans, Michael Haynes, Ted Lacey, John Minar, Donavan Ochs, Anna Rapson, Andrew Schudlich, Esther Send, Mark Smith, Don Spezia, Grace Stamos, Honour Stewart, Bert Thomas, Tim Wade, Sheen Watkins, Rachel Winslow and several additional photographers from the Traverse Area Camera Club.
