New owners, same Funistrada

From staff reports

Mike and Susan Garver acquired Trattoria Funistrada on May 1 from Tom and Holly Reay, who opened Burdickville’s beloved Italian restaurant in 2000.

But Susan insists that nothing will change. Same menu, same ambience, same friendly staff. Holly will remain this summer as bookkeeper. The Garvers may repaint the exterior, but they’ll use the exact same light green hue as before.

“We purchased Funistrada simply to preserve the legacy that Tom and Holly created and perfected these past 23 years,” said Susan. “Our intent is to keep Funistrada exactly the same, including the outstanding staff, delicious recipes, and the warm and inviting atmosphere that so very many people, including our own family, have grown to love.

“We could not imagine our community without Funistrada, so we feel fortunate and honored that we are able to carry on the wonderful tradition created by the Reay family.”

Tom and Holly have few plans as of yet for their retirement. Tom said he will take most of the summer off and enjoy bicycling, sailing, and traveling—“and not being called into work every day at 5 p.m.”

“I’m proud of what we did to create community, a family outside of a family,” said Tom. “I’m proud of our staff and that we kept them for 20 years. They were a big part of our success.”

“We have made friends with so many people over the years,” added Holly.

Longtime employee Sarah Dilley, who will continue to manage the front of the house, posted a poignant ode to the Reays on April 30, the day before the restaurant officially transferred to the Garvers.

“Tom and Holly, Thank you for all that was, all there is, and all there will ever be. Funi would never have existed without you!

“We are honored to carry on your legacy. Thank you for sharing your vision. Thank you for making us part of your family. Thank you for being part of our family. It is our privilege to carry it forward from here. …

“You have given so much to our community. You have given so much to all of us. You have shown us what it means to be a good boss, human and member of the community. You have cared for all of us like we were your family from the very beginning. A shining example of what it looks like to be a great human. Thank you.”
