“Love and Loss” by Canticum Novum climaxes 2015 Leelanau Summer Music Festival

Upcoming Event

From staff reports

The premier vocal ensemble of the region climaxes the fifth season of the Leelanau Summer Music Festival, which presents “World Class Music in America’s Most Beautiful Place.” On Saturday, Aug. 1, at 7:30, the 2015 Festival presents Canticum Novum singing of “Love and Loss,” in historic Holy Rosary Church, Isadore, 6982 S. Schomberg Road, 2 1/2 miles north of Cedar.

Known for imaginative programming interweaving many styles of music, Canticum Novum (Latin for “New Song”) aims to touch the hearts and souls of the audience. Gorgeous songs of spiritual love and human loss by Brahms, Gabreli, and Mozart, as well as spirituals and contemporary music will resonate in the glorious acoustics of beautiful Holy Rosary Church while the evening sun illuminates the priceless stained glass windows that surround this sacred space.

Dynamic conductor Jeffrey Cobb will comment to guide listeners into the music. He is director of music at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, where he and his colleagues offer four choirs: the Grand Traverse Chorale, Chamber Singers, Canticum Novum, and Vocal Jazz Ensemble. Instrumentalists may join the NMC Concert band or one of their jazz ensembles. The NMC Children’s Choir offers six choirs for children in the K-9th grades.

Accompanist is Peggy Johnson at the piano and century-old restored Hinners-Wigton tracker pipe organ.

Tickets are $20 for an individual; $10 for students with ID. Purchase at MyNorthTickets.com to make cash or check purchases. Tickets will also be available at the door.
