Leelanau Solid Waste Council hosts composting workshop

From staff reports

The Leelanau County Solid Waste Council hosts a composting workshop on Tuesday, April 23, from 9-11 a.m. at the Leelanau County Government Center on M-204 between Lake Leelanau and Suttons Bay.

Have you wanted to be a successful backyard composter? Have you been collecting your materials into a pile to compost but nothing seems to be happening? What’s the big deal about composting and organic materials management anyway? Do you want to take your passive compost to the next level with hot composting? You’ll never look at your coffee grounds, eggshells and slimy cucumbers the same again.

You will learn how collecting, composting and using finished compost effects your soil and your community. This informative and upbeat presentation on backyard composting is for you.

The guest speaker will be Amy Freeman, organics maven composting specialist with Iris Waste Diversion Specialists. Freeman has been working in the composting and recycling field for many years. Her current work includes Iris Waste Diversion Specialists, Inc. as the Organics Maven and Composting Specialist. She is the Composting Technician with the Michigan Food and Farming System (MIFFS) Women in Agriculture Farm Development Center on the campus of Genesys Hospital in Flint, Michigan. She also works with Country Oaks Landscape and Composting in S.E. Michigan. Amy is an active member of the Michigan Organics Council.

The event is free. RSVP: 231‐256‐9812, or email planning@co.leelanau.mi.us
