Italian cities inspire Center Gallery exhibit

From staff reports

Traverse City artist Joe De Luca will remember his recent travels through the Italian cities of Tuscany, Pompeii and Herculaneum in a series of mixed media panels on exhibit at the Center Gallery/Lake Street Studios on Lake Street in Glen Arbor. The show opens Aug. 5 with a 6 p.m. reception.

De Luca, professor emeritus in art at Western Michigan University, spent part of 2009 and 2010 touring Italy. He was inspired by ancient historical events, including the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, which buried Pompeii and Herculaneum entirely. His travels resulted in a series of compositions on paper and wood panels, using a variety of media – from oil paint to oil crayon, pencil and collage.

The show continues through Aug. 11. For more information, please call (231) 334-3179.
