If you’re looking for a reason to get back to Leelanau this fall, consider the Leelanau Peninsula Vintners Association’s annual Harvest Stompede Vineyard Run and Walk and Wine Tour over the weekend of September 20 and 21. It’s considered one of the most scenic running and wine touring events in the Midwest and is returning to the Leelanau Peninsula for the eighth year. The race itself is the kickoff of the weekend’s festivities and will be held on Saturday, September 20 at 9 a.m. Designed for serious and recreational runners and walkers, it’s a great event for spectators as well.
“This is a one-of-a-kind annual run sponsored by the Traverse City Track Club and hosted by the Leelanau Peninsula winemakers,” says race coordinator Nate Rousse. “The course winds through absolutely gorgeous vineyards and is open to the public only on race day.”
“We’ve designed it for competitive or pleasure runners and also the curious walker — this year, we expect to have about 900 participants,” says Rousse. “We use a Chip timing system and award bragging rights at the finish line before we toast the winners along the wine trail route.”
The seven-mile “Grape Stomper” will be highlighted in the September 2008 Runners World Magazine article on “unique races”. A 5K “Stinger” and non-competitive 5K “Harvester” walk are also planned. The cost to participate in the walk/runs is $25 per person. Those wishing to register for one of the race events must do so online at www.lpwines.com.
The Harvest Stompede Wine Tour follows the race and offers a special pour and food celebrating the season at each of the 15 Leelanau Peninsula Vintners Association member wineries.
The event sold out in 2007 and advance tickets are required. Tickets are $40 and are available online at www.lpwines.com. Tasting hours on Saturday are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Sunday hours are noon to 5 p.m. All ticket holders receive a commemorative event wine glass as well.
