Glen Lake Library highlights democracy symposium, North Manitou stories

The Glen Lake Community Library in downtown Empire will several community events in the weeks to come.

On Saturday, June 13, the Library will participate in the live TED Democracy symposium, featuring brand-new TED Talks focused on the evolution and future of democracy. Streaming live from Philadelphia leading up to the nation’s 250th birthday celebration, this national event brings together bold thinkers and change-makers to share ideas designed to inform and inspire. The library will host three live sessions, beginning at 11 am, 2 pm and 4 pm, with breaks in between. For more information about this special opportunity, check out VisitPhilly.com/TEDLive.

Stepping Off the Boat

On Wednesday, June 17, at 7 pm the Library will host Susan Hollister Wasserman, author of Stepping off the boat: stories from North Manitou Island. Published by Leelanau Press of Glen Arbor, the book is an historical account of the growth and development of this Lake Michigan island community from the 1800s to the early 1940s. It features hundreds of photographs, vividly documenting this chapter of our region’s history. The book was also selected as a 2026 Michigan Notable Book by the Library of Michigan, which is sponsoring a state-wide tour of Notable authors.
