Friends of Sleeping Bear report “fantastic” Heritage Trail conditions

Sports/Adventure

From staff reports

The Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes, which maintains the popular Heritage Trail and grooms it for cross-country skiing during the winter months, reported “fantastic” conditions in an mail update on Friday.

“We’ve been treated to 12-18 inches of fresh, fluffy snow since Wednesday of this week! Our amazing team started the week braving an Arctic blast of cold air and wrapped it up tackling a constant flurry of snowfall. Phew—it’s been an incredible winter adventure for our dedicated volunteers, and we couldn’t be more grateful for their hard work!”

Here are current ski conditions, as of Friday:

  • Pierce Stocking to Empire: Groomers are heading out (Friday) to re-roll and reset track as it was covered by more fresh snow.
  • Dune Climb to Pierce Stocking: Currently has been rolled and tracks were set a while ago but have been covered by snow they are re-setting tracks (Friday).
  • Pierce Stocking to Glen Arbor: Best conditions at this point, rolled and classic track set, los of folks were enjoying both CC and skate skiing.
  • Dune Climb Sledding: Conditions look great for sledding! Bring goggles, the snow will be flying as tracks are cut into the snow.
