COVID-19 in Leelanau County, by the numbers

From staff reports

The Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department (BLDHD) reported 13 COVID-19 positive cases in Leelanau County on Thursday, March 25—the largest single-day tally since January 15. This reflects what some fear could be a third wave of the virus (following Spring 2020 and Winter 2020-21). BLDHD reported only 1 case in Leelanau today, Jan. 26.

The Health Department reported 33 cases in Leelanau over a 5-day period between March 20-25. Eleven of those 33 cases are people in their 50s, representing the largest age group.

Since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, BLDHD has reported 982 total cases in Leelanau and 957 in Benzie. Of those, 96 cases remain active in Leelanau, and 64 cases in Benzie. The Health Department reports 15 COVID-19 deaths in Leelanau and 31 in Benzie. One person from the district is currently hospitalized; a total of 136 have been hospitalized during the pandemic.

Nearly 40% in Leelanau have received one vaccine dose; nearly 25% have received both

According to the Health Department, 38.5% percent of Leelanau residents, 16 years and older, have received their initial dose of the vaccine, and 24% have received both doses.

That’s far ahead of the rest of the state, where 26.28% percent of the population has received their first dose, and 15% are fully vaccinated. Nationwide, 27% have received at least one dose, and 15% are fully vaccinated.

In the 50-64 age group, 36% have received their initial dose.

In the 75 years and older age group, 56% have received their initial dose.

Health Department administers dose number 10,000

Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department administered their 10,000th dose today at our COVID-19 vaccine clinic at Frankfort High School. The lucky individual was Dorothy McDougall, a resident of Benzie County in her 90’s.

“Getting the vaccine helps protect us and we should all do it,” said Dorothy McDougall, of Benzie County. “I feel lucky to be able to come to the Frankfort gym.”

“I am so proud to be part of the Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department team as a volunteer,” said Christina Plamondon, CNM, RN, MSN. “Giving the 10,000th dose to Dorothy was an honor and a great milestone for our counties. There is much more work to be done but we will overcome. It takes a village.”

“We are so excited to hit this major milestone as a small health department,” stated Lisa Peacock, Health Officer. “I often refer to our health department as “small but mighty” and providing this number of vaccinations to our community in 3 months’ time proves it true once again. The determination they have shown in vaccinating our residents is reflective of their dedication to protecting the health of the people in Benzie and Leelanau counties”.
