Gosling’s book Dilation & Curettage explores the three months around the death of her mother and the loss of her first born. Without giving way to melodrama, Gosling maintains a voice that carries each poem from beginning to end without jeopardizing her role as both poet and subject, or overemphasizing either role. The histories she creates are convincing and believable. Each poem is a narrative string that entangles who she is.
Gosling has been writing for most of her life. She began studying poetry at Interlochen Arts Academy and went on to study at Western Michigan University’s Creative Writing program. During that time she lived in Cork, Ireland for a year studying Irish Literature at University College, Cork. Gosling attended poetry workshops in Prague with Anne Marie Macari and Gerald Stern in the summer of 2005, and the past two summers she has taken part in the Bear River Writer’s Conference near Petoskey. There, she attended workshops on poetry and memoirs with noted authors Bill Roorbach and Richard McCann. Dilation & Curettage establishes Gosling as an exciting new voice in poetry, and a new author to watch for.
Koelewyn, the founder of the Paper Airplane Press, has been hand printing poetry and other manuscripts since 1977. He has printed work for such nationally recognized figures as singer-songwriter Andrew Calhoun. Koelewyn, along with the National Society of Arts and Letters, recently celebrated the tenth anniversary of their Mid-Michigan poetry contest for which he publishes the winning poems. He also publishes Lake Effect, a collection of writings that include fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. Last year, Koelewyn began as a visiting artist teaching letterpress printing at Michigan State University. In an edition of 600 that includes fifty hand-stitched copies, Dilation & Curettage is the Paper Airplane Press’ latest and most stunning achievement.
