Leelanau County cemeteries contain numerous early European settlers and their families, representing an important historical record and an integral part of the local heritage. These graves and monuments are the last and often only record of their life. Repairing, cleaning, and caretaking these physical community archives is a meaningful way to preserve history. Over the last five years the Leelanau Historical Society has taken an active role in facilitating workshops to teach best-practice rehabilitation methods with instruction from professional monument conservators. Join the Historical Society on May 24 for a Beechwood Cemetery Cleaning Bee. Click here for more information.

The Bay Community Theatre in Suttons Bay resumes its Made-In-Michigan film series on Sunday, May 19, at 4 pm with “The DJ on Wallaker Hill.” The movie, written and directed by Rich Brauer, is a suspense thriller and homage to Alfred Hitchcock. The film’s story demonstrates how the events that took place at a small wilderness radio station in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula on Christmas Eve 1963, make it difficult to distinguish between a law-abiding citizen and a criminal.

Coffee With The Authors is a live, conversational interview with local and regional authors about the craft and process of writing at the Glen Arbor Arts Center. On May 18 Brittany Cavallaro, the author of seven Young Adult [YA] novels, explains this stand-alone genre, and how she approaches it. Sarah Bearup-Neal, GAAC gallery manager, leads the conversation, which begins at 11 am. Cavallaro is a creative writing instructor at the Interlochen Arts Academy, her alma mater [her New York Times bestselling Charlotte Holmes series is set in a boarding school]. YA fiction is geared to readers ages 12 to 18 years, but it tackles mature themes and subjects the sets it apart from traditional middle school literature. Cavallaro is also the author of three volumes of poetry, and frequently collaborates with other writers.

River Club Glen Arbor, located where the Crystal River turns and heads northeast toward The Homestead and Sleeping Bear Bay, has announced its grand opening in mid-June. The project of former advertising executive and current Lake Leelanau resident Mike Sheldon, the River Club will offer Mexican-inspired foods, signature drinks from the Caddy Shack bar, riverfront and sky deck seating, a concert stage, a landscaped 18-hole mini-golf course and a gift shop. The destination will bring even more action to the east side of Glen Arbor, where Crystal River Outfitters, the Cyclery, the M22 Store and Coastal already draw crowds. River Club will throw a Job Fair/Party in the Park on Saturday, May 18, from 11 am – 3 pm. The event will provide an opportunity to meet the team and get an exclusive firsthand tour of the park.
